Renewing letting agent registration – training requirement
Letting agents need to renew their registration with the government on a three yearly basis and the first renewals will fall due this year. The Scottish Government will email you to let you know your renewal is due. If your LARN starts with 18, (for example LARN1806008) then your renewal will be due this year. If it starts with 19, it will be due next year and if it starts with 20, renewal will be during 2023.
At the point the renewal application is made, those subject to the training requirement must have a formal qualification in letting agency work. For guidance on who is subject to the training requirement see our factsheet on letting agent regulation.
If that qualification was obtained more than three years before the date of the application for renewal, this person must also be able to demonstrate that they have undergone 20 hours of training in the last three years.
The training must be related to carrying out letting agency work and include at least 15 hours of verifiable formal training and at least five hours of informal self-certified training. All SAL and Landlord Accreditation Scotland (LAS) events and training count for formal hours. The five hours of informal training can include reading Landlord Focus magazine and our regular enews updates.
Landlord Accreditation Scotland offer a number of training courses which can be counted towards the 15 hours. These are being operated as webinars at present due to the coronavirus crisis. Further details on courses can be found here.
