PRT exemption for veterans & care leavers
Following consultation with SAL and other representative bodies, the Scottish Government has published draft legislation which adds a further exemption to the schedule of tenancies which can’t be Private Residential Tenancies (PRTs). The new exemption is for tenancies where the landlord is a charity providing accommodation to veterans or providing temporary accommodation to care leavers as they transition to independent living. It will ensure that tenants who no longer need the housing support offered by the charity can be moved on, and also prevents family members from succeeding to the tenancy if the tenant being supported by the charity dies. It allows such charities to operate as originally intended within common law without conflict to their charitable purpose. Full details of the exemption can be read in the draft legislation here.
