Neighbour mediation for the private rented sector

Scottish Mediation is delighted to have received funding from the Safedeposits Charitable Trust to provide a free mediation service for neighbour disputes in Scotland where at least one party is in private rental accommodation. These disputes can be extremely stressful and destructive and can lead to time-consuming complaints and loss of tenancies. Mediation has been shown to resolve many of these issues but cost is often a barrier.

The Neighbour Mediation project will fund up to 20 mediations over the next twelve months where –

  • The parties live in Scotland.
  • At least one party is in private rented accommodation.
  • All parties are willing to mediate.

Referrals can be made by either party or by their landlord or letting agent.

The project will be administered by Scottish Mediation and the mediations provided by fully qualified accredited mediators from the Scottish Mediation Register.

The Neighbour Mediation Project is appropriate if: 

  • The parties live in Scotland.
  • At least one of the parties in in private rented accommodation.
  • Everyone in the conflict agrees to participate in mediation.

A wide range of issues can be resolved through mediation including  those involving –

  • Noise
  • Parking
  • Pets
  • Shared areas
  • Boundary disputes
  • High hedges and trees
  • Cutting down hedges and trees
  • Property and garden maintenance


Scottish Mediation  will advise on individual cases and if an enquiry is not eligible will, where available, signpost to an appropriate alternative resource.
