Scottish Mediation

Scottish Mediation was established in 1990 to raise the profile of mediation in Scotland and to provide access to quality assured mediation services.

Scottish Mediation seeks to:

  • Promote a wider understanding of the appropriate use of mediation in conflict management and prevention
  • Support and promote education, training and research in skills and best practice
  • Create and encourage links between mediators and Scottish public, private, voluntary and community organisations
  • Promote and organise standards of professional conduct and training

Why mediation?

Mediation works – not only is mediation usually successful in reaching agreement, but people are more likely to stick to that agreement rather than when something was decided by others for example in grievance and complaints procedures or in court.

Mediation:

  • helps people to solve problems that they are facing
  • is confidential and unbiased
  • encourages early resolution of disagreements
  • puts the people involved in control of the outcome
  • shows that you are keen to resolve your dispute amicably
  • enables ongoing relationships to be maintained

Mediation is used more and more to support the resolution of conflict in a wide variety of contexts.
