Letting agents – renew in good time
Letting agents must apply to renew their letting agent registration every three years. SAL letting agent members are urged to apply to renew their registration well before their deadline date to ensure there is time to iron out any difficulties that might come to light during the renewal process. The registration system will send agents two renewal reminders – the first six months before the renewal is due and another three months before it is due. The system will accept a renewal application from the three month point onwards, and the registration date is preserved regardless of when the application is made or approved, so there is no benefit to leaving renewal to the last minute. At the point of renewal, details of CPD training must be submitted for each person in the organisation who is subject to the training requirement. 20 hours of CPD is required per person, and the training must have been undertaken in the three years leading up to the agent’s renewal date. CPD undertaken by letting agents must be related to the following topics:
- the legal obligations relating to letting agency work;
- the rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants;
- handling landlords’ and tenants’ money;
- arranging, managing and ending a tenancy;
- managing repairs to and maintenance of a property;
- customer communications and complaints handling; and
- equality issues
